BOS Components

The term “Balance of System,” often abbreviated as BoS, refers to the collection of components and subsystems in a solar energy system other than the solar panels or modules themselves. It encompasses the various components required to support the proper operation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system.

Mounting and Racking Systems: These structures provide support for the solar panels and are essential for their proper installation on rooftops or in open spaces.

Wiring, Cables, and Connectors: Essential components for transmitting electricity within the system, connecting the solar panels, inverters, charge controllers, and batteries.

Electrical Enclosures and Combiner Boxes: Enclosures that house electrical components and combiner boxes used to consolidate outputs from multiple solar panels.

Charge Controllers: Necessary for systems with energy storage (such as battery backup systems), they regulate the charging of batteries by controlling the flow of electricity from the solar panels.

Electrical Protection Devices: Includes circuit breakers, fuses, surge protectors, and lightning arrestors, which help protect the system from electrical faults, overvoltage, and lightning strikes.

Monitoring and Control Systems: Devices that monitor and control the performance of the system, providing information on energy production, system health, and potential issues.

Battery Storage (if applicable): Batteries used for storing excess energy generated by the solar panels for later use, particularly in off-grid or hybrid solar systems.

Grounding and Safety Components: Earthing systems, safety labels, and other safety-related equipment to ensure the safety and proper functioning of the entire solar system.

Utility Connection Components: For grid-tied systems, equipment such as grid-tie inverters and net metering equipment is part of the BoS, allowing the system to connect to and interact with the utility grid.

Accessories and Miscellaneous Components: Various smaller components, fasteners, and junction boxes are included to facilitate the installation and interconnection of system components.

Labor and Installation Costs: Expenses associated with the labor required for system installation, including design, engineering, and installation services.
